The trial, conducted by the Center for AIDS Research Program in South Africa (CAPRISA, its acronym in English) was presented at the XVIII International AIDS Conference, which is taking place in Vienna.

Women are more vulnerable to HIV infection, anatomical and biological reasons, but also cultural. Gender inequalities mean that many can not negotiate that monogamy is mutual, or that their partner use a condom during sex.

In women using the gel more than 80% of their relations, the efficacy was 54%.
